Parr wants this story to fit every family, and notes that every family is unique, so as the reader, we can change the characters to fit our specific family. Every family is different, so feel free to change the pronouns in this text to fit your family" (Parr, 3). Though there are varying families in Parr's book, he makes a note at the beginning of the book stating, "This book is meant to be read with someone you love. There are heterosexual, homosexual, and single parents that are all able to help support their child. and the family that adopts them varies too. Within the book, each child is different, a different color, size, gender, etc. Each two pages is its own short story, having a child that needs something specific, being adopted by a family who is able to help support and give them what they need. We Belong Together, is a great, diverse book about adoption and different families. Lastly, a baby boy who needed someone to tell him, "I love you," adopted by a heterosexual couple. A baby girl adopted by a gay couple who were able to read to her. An older boy adopted who needed a friend, adopted by a single mother. A boy who needed someone to kiss his boo-boos, who is adopted by a biracial heterosexual couple. There is an older girl who needed someone to help her grow, who is adopted by a single father. The story continues with this same pattern of a child in need of something and receiving it once he or she is adopted.
It states that the child and mother belong together because the mother is able to give the child what he needs, which is a home. The boy is adopted by the mother because she has a house that she wanted to share with a child. On the next page, there is a mother with her arms open wide, sitting on the front steps with a huge "Welcome" sign above her head. The boy does not have a home and is in search of one. In We Belong Together, Todd Parr begins by illustrating a young boy dreaming of a home.
